TAD Journal is a peer-reviewed international journal dedicated to the advancement of scholarship in the field of building technology and its translation, integration, and impact on architecture and design.
On September 18, 2025, TAD 9:1 Generative issue editor David Newton hosted an online panel with authors Tim Fu, Antoine Picon, Marcin Kosicki, Sam Omans, Thomas W. Sanchez, Molly Wright Steenson, Martha Tsigkari, and Snoweria Zhang. The riveting conversation covered the impacts of AI in design practices and highlighted the themes presented in their contributions, including: Epistemology and Authorship in the Age of Generative AI, Design Methodologies and Tools, the Social, Political, and Ethical Implications of AI, and Urban Imaginaries.
Tim Fu is the founder of Studio Tim Fu, an architectural design firm pioneering the integration of AI into cutting-edge architecture. His research focuses on the convergence of generative AI with parametric design, pushing the boundaries of digital fabrication. Tim’s work has been featured in exhibitions and media, including the Venice Biennale, Bloomberg, and Dezeen.
Marcin Kosicki is an Associate Partner at Foster + Partners in the Applied R + D (ARD) group. His research centers on complex geometry, digital fabrication, performance-driven design using cloud computing, and machine learning. His expertise has been used on many high-profile projects and published in peer-reviewed papers.
Antoine Picon is a professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design. He works on the relations between architecture, cities, and technology. He is the author of Digital Culture in Architecture (2010), Ornament: The Politics of Architecture and Technology (2013), Smart Cities: A Spatialised Intelligence (2015), and The Materiality of Architecture (2021). He is also the Chairman of the Foundation Le Corbusier.
Sam Omans is the industry strategy manager for architecture at Autodesk. In 2021, Omans joined the faculty at the Yale University School of Architecture. He holds a PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU.
Thomas W. Sanchez, PhD, AICP, is a Professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Texas A&M University. His most recent books include Networks in the Knowledge Economy and Planning Knowledge and Research. His forthcoming book, AI for Urban Planning, will be published by Routledge (2025). Sanchez serves as the American Planning Association (APA) Education Committee Chair.
Molly Wright Steenson is CEO and President of the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis and an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She researches the history of AI and contemporary questions of AI and human values. She is the author of Architectural Intelligence: How Designers and Architects Created the Digital Landscape (MIT Press).
Martha Tsigkari is a Senior Partner and Head of the Applied R+D (ARD) group at Foster + Partners. Her background spans architecture, engineering, and computer science. She has two decades of experience working on projects of all scales and uses. She is also an Associate Professor at the Bartlett, UCL, and has lectured and published about computational design internationally.
Snoweria Zhang is an architect, artist, and mathematician. She is a senior computational designer at Google and teaches at the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. Her work focuses on the intersection of technology and urbanism. She is licensed and practices in New York State.
