Surface Tendon: Designing a Curved Folding Origami Joint

Curved folding is a variation of origami that utilizes curved instead of straight creases. The curvature of the folding creases results in the bending of surfaces. While curved folding is mathematically complex, this research documents the authors’ attempt to approach the field as disciplinary outsiders. In this context, success entails conceiving a design product and inviting designers of various industry backgrounds to consider curved folding as a technology. Surface Tendon refers to the invention produced through this process: a novel flexion and extension joint system that exploits the structural, mechanical, and kinematic properties of curved folding.
