You Should Patent That!

“Within the field, architecture faculty are trained to ‘design think,’ and their solutions come quickly. As a result, they do not always value those solutions as inventions. A profession-wide willingness to share ideas means faculty often neglect to protect their intellectual property.”

Liane Hancock is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of New Mexico. Her research focuses on innovative beginning design pedagogy and scholarship on building materials and construction methods. In 2026, Belt Publishing will publish her book Perfect Concrete, which examines the design and construction of the Pulitzer Arts Foundation.
