Issue 3.2

Data Integrity and Future Systems

Data is neither pure nor agnostic. Rather, data is constructed by human beings, as are the systems that surround it. Individuals, governments, and organizations capitalize, originate, manipulate, frame, and adopt data. On a daily basis one experiences the control of data through social networks that provide companies with an individual’s data or “surveillance assets” for their profit. As researchers, practitioners, and educators, it is essential that we be cognizant of the ways that data is used, and that we as designers be active in the creation of new data systems and protections.
