The Kendall/MIT Gateway is located on Main Street at the threshold between the city of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus, where the Boston metro (the “T”) subway station is situated (Figure 1). The subway tracks run under Main Street, and the headhouses pop up on the north and south sides of the street. Including the adjacent MIT Site 3, 4, and 5 buildings, the larger complex entailed a negotiated up-zoned district, all while respecting and incorporating the historic buildings of Main Street. The adjoining streets, as well as the new MIT Gateway, were designed to introduce a civic dimension, enhancing connectivity between the Cambridge community and the Charles River. A new quad would anchor the southern face of this proposal, creating a social space at the eastern end of the ‘Out-Finite Corridor.’
