Mass-Customization, a term coined in 1987 by Stan Davis in his seminal book Future Perfect, described what was at the time an imminent transition away from mass-standardization into business models that deliver tailored goods to meet the specific needs and desires of individuals. In the 30 years since, however, architects and designers have used this term to mean something quite different: a pathway for design and production to free itself from a reliance on standardized elements, assembly methods, and configurations. This seemingly bifurcated trajectory is where the Mass-Customization and Design Democratization symposium began.
