Issue 3.1

Building-Integrated Solar Technology: Architectural Design with Photovoltaics and Solar Thermal Energy

The world of architecture is in the midst of a revolution, a seismic sea-change in how our energy infrastructure is evolving. The importance of constructing energy-efficient buildings is becoming a worldwide priority. Energy codes in the United States and Europe are increasingly targeting lower overall levels of building net-energy consumption. The states of California and Illinois have both recently enacted legislation to promote the implementation of solar energy. The California mandate even goes so far as to require all new residential constructions beginning in 2020 to include photovoltaic systems sized to handle the annual electrical loads of the building.
