Issue 8.2

Integrating Participatory Filmmaking in Architectural CGI in Postoccupancy Evaluation 

Our research enriches postoccupancy evaluation (POE) methods in low-income housing in the Global South by integrating architectural computer-generated images (CGI), typically devoid of human activity, with participatory filmmaking capturing actual occupant behavior. Our prototype combines CGI spaces with real-life domestic activities recorded by women in a Mumbai Slum Rehabilitation Authority/SRA colony. These films illustrate the physiotemporal scale and simultaneous occurrence of activities in identical living spaces. They reveal intense use of confined spaces and clashes between uniform tenements and individual occupation. This method exposes counternarratives to technocratic housing policies and rigid design frameworks.
